How Catholics Pray

The Catechism (a book that outlines the Catholic faith) names the three major expressions of prayer and they are probably not what you are thinking:

VOCAL PRAYER - actually verbalizing, either out loud or interiorly, and conversing with God. This happens individually and in groups. It can be something that is pre-written (such as the "Hail Mary" or "Our Father") or in our own words. "Whether or not our prayer is heard depends not on the number of words, but the fervor of our souls." (CCC 2700)

MEDITATION - engages thought, imagination, emotion, and desire. Often meditation is helped by books, such as Scripture, images, and other guides to help us focus and shut out distractions. The goal of meditation is to make our own faith the subject by confronting it with the reality of life.

CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER - is the gaze of faith fixed on Jesus, an attentiveness to God's words, a silent love. Through contemplative prayer, "we let our masks fall and turn our hearts back to the Lord who loves us, so as to hand ourselves over to him as an offering to be purified and transformed." (CCC 2711)

Prayer is a Relationship

Prayer is a conscious relationship with God. Just as we spend time with friends because we love them and care for them, we spend time in prayer because we love God and want to be with God. Read more...
